Among the many ways to aid charities -- from giving cash to volunteering time for service projects -- donating a car has grown in popularity. Nonprofit organizations can use donated vehicles to serve their transportation needs or they may simply sell the cars and use the cash to fund their efforts. If you choose to donate a car, be sure you complete the title transfer correctly or your good deed may turn out to be trouble for you.
Check Charity Status
Donating a car can be a smart financial move because you are allowed to use it as a tax write-off. But you need to properly transfer the title and keep a record of your transaction to be able to get the write-off that saves money on your taxes.
Before doing anything with your car's title, check to make sure that the charity you are donating to has the proper nonprofit status. For tax purposes, you may only deduct donations to 501(c)(3) charities. Donating to nonprofits with the ability to lobby the government who have a designation of 501(c)(4) will not result in a tax benefit, according to CharityNavigator.org.
In California, you need a copy of your title in order to donate your vehicle, as well as a notice of transfer and release of liability form, which must be electronically filed with the California Department of Motor Vehicles, or DMV. Some vehicles will also require a smog certification or odometer mileage form. If you are interested in a tax deduction, make sure you keep copies of all paperwork as proof of the transaction.
Certificate of Title
Your vehicle's certificate of title is the most important document in the vehicle donation process. If you have lost your vehicle title, a duplicate title is also available from the California DMV. Ownership Release
Once you have your certificate of title or a duplicate copy of the title, you will need to sign line 1 to release ownership of the vehicle to the charity or organization. Keep in mind that you can only transfer a certificate of title to a charity if there are no liens on the vehicle.

Smog Certification
As of Jan. 1, 2005, only donated vehicles older than four years require a smog certificate, with the exception of diesel automobiles. If your vehicle is over four years old, you will need to provide the charity with a copy of the biennial smog certification or a vehicle inspection report that shows a smog certification within 90 days of the donation.
Odometer Mileage Form
Any donated vehicle over 10 years old requires an odometer mileage form, known as Reg 262, or the Vehicle/Vessel Transfer and Reassignment Form. For a mailed copy of the form, call the automated, 24-hour California DMV helpline at 1-800-777-0133.
Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability
Within five days of donating your vehicle to charity, you must submit a copy of the Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability form to the California DMV. For a PDF copy of the form, which will release any vehicle liability, see Resources.
IRS Forms
If you would like a tax deduction for your gift, you must donate to a charity that is recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) organization. Vehicles worth more than $500 at the time of donation require IRS Form 8283, which is available in PDF form in Resources. If you have ever tried to donate an old car to a charity, you quickly realized that most charities won't take an old car that doesn't have a title. You have the option of contacting the Department of Motor Vehicles in an attempt to secure the title for the car, which will cost money. Or, you must pay to have it junked. There is another free alternative.

Provide them with your name, phone number and email address. This information is necessary because the towing service must contact you to schedule the vehicle pickup
Tell them about the vehicle. Give them the year, vehicle ID number, make, model and color. The vehicle ID number is not absolutely necessary, but it does help to expedite the removal of the vehicle.
Describe the condition of the vehicle. Don't be embarrassed. Give them an honest description of the vehicle. After all, the name of the business is Junk My Car, their used to receiving clunkers.
Let them know where the vehicle is located and click Submit to send the information. Once you submit your information, you'll be given an ID number and a link so that you could print a Tow Tag for the vehicle. Once you print the Tow Tag, write your Claim ID number in the space provided place the tag in the windshield.
Wait for the tow company to contact you. This usually happens within 48 hours of submitting your vehicle for removal. The tow company will call to confirm the location of the vehicle and ask for any additional information. They will inquire as to whether or not the vehicle has a title, but if you don't have one, that's not a problem. They accept cars without a title.
Update your removal request once the vehicle is picked up. Go back to the Junk My Car website and update the status of the car removal. The folks at Junk My Car are interested in how your car removal went, so let them know whether or not you were satisfied with their service.
