How to Help the Homeless Veterans of New York
New York is one of the most popular cities in America. It seems that every movie that comes out of Hollywood takes place in New York. Unfortunately, terrorists choose to target New York City as the prime location to carryout their plans for September 11th, 2001. John Lennon loved New York so much that he decided to live there despite the obvious security threat. Of course we all know the ending to that story. Let’s not forget the legendary New York Yankees. Even when their sports teams are struggling, their fans remain strong.

New York is a great example of the American way of life. We love to indulge ourselves and get everything we want fast and easily. New York is home to some of the best shopping centers, entertainment venues, restaurants and businesses. New York is a great tourist attraction  and it can be overwhelming for some. I am use to the city life of Ohio. Our largest mall has around fifty stores. In comparison, New York is like a continuous stretch of malls that has just about everything you could need. I enjoyed my trip to New York, but not  as much as my “shop-alcoholic” girlfriend.  New York is a city of full of life and it is not for the timid.
New York: The City That Never Sleeps
The saying that New York never sleeps is almost 100% accurate. There is more activities at 3am in New York than a Saturday afternoon in Ohio and Michigan combined. New York is actually quite beautiful during the night. The thousands of lights remind us that the buildings are still full of life.

New York: A Deeper Look:
Walking around the streets of New York City at night is adventurous. It also can be dangerous. One wrong decision could get you in serious trouble. It would be advisable to never walk alone unless you are a certified ninja or have a SWAT team for backup. I fortunately was walking with a few of my friends. We were going to see a Broadway show, but we decided to just go sight seeing. Equipped with $5 sandals from Walmart and plastic butter knife, we began our journey.

We were enjoying the sights and just watching people walking by. We walked by many people that were talking to themselves. We met a guy that claimed he was Donald Trump. However, with his bald head and missing teeth, he looked more like a retired hockey player.

We began to feel more comfortable with our surroundings. We decided to walk through this alley that we thought was a shortcut. There was a homeless man everywhere we looked. Some of them were huddled around dumpsters and some were fast asleep. While my friends wanted to run in the other direction, my caring mind was amazed. I was just thinking about how cruel their life must be. I then was  astonished to see one of the homeless had a jacket with a Vietnam Veteran logo.  I didn’t understand how that could be possible. How could a war veteran be homeless? I always thought that Veterans received government funding to get through their physical and mental disabilities.

I have discovered that I was very wrong. No matter what war a veteran fought in, they did not get permanent help from the military and government. In fact many veterans return home to their families with severe mental and physical disabilities. Unable to function in society, veterans become isolated and are forced to live on the streets. In fact after researching information online about the homeless, I discovered that one out of every four homeless persons are a veteran! That means 25% of homeless people are a veteran.

Donate Your Car in New York
After viewing the Vietnam Veterans of America website, I discovered that we can help support homeless veterans by donating our cars in New York. I suggested this to all of my friends and even sent messages to many on Facebook. While I did not get many responses, I did get my friend to donate his old car in New York. All car donations in New York are tax deductible. He was able to get some money back for donating his car. My friend only seemed to care that he was able to get rid of his car fast and easily, but I felt a sense of pride for helping homeless veterans in NY.

All the benefits of car donations in New York City support homeless veterans. The proceeds help support veterans by giving food and shelter. I cannot live another day knowing that our hero’s are living on the streets of New York.

I thoroughly enjoyed my vacation in New York. I saw some sites that I only saw in the movies. I will never forget the group of homeless people that we walked by that night. It changed my perspective on life and our veterans. You can help our homeless veterans
